Addis International Film Festival (AIFF) on Human Rights

The Addis International Film Festival (AIFF) is a documentary film festival held annually in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Organized by Initiative Africa, an education based non-governmental organization; it is the largest independent documentary film festival in Ethiopia.

AIFF is a unique initiative seeking to use the power of documentaries and short films to support innovative ways of creating awareness to social issues that arise from discrimination, poverty, migration, environmental mismanagement etc. Each year the festival highlights the industry’s emerging talent, paying homage to the year’s best documentary films which expose the audience to thought-provoking, insightful, unique and/or controversial perspectives.

Objectives

  • Preparing socially responsible citizenry through films.
  • Providing opportunities for networking and collaboration among local and international film professionals.
  • Exposing more people to audacious documentary films

Events

Film Screening 
Films presented in the festival are a powerful statement for social change. Over the past six years hundreds of award-winning documentary features from all over the globe have been screened in different venues across the country.

Panel Discussions.

Screenings are followed by lively question and answer sessions with directors, producers and industry professionals. Guest speakers including international media professionals, members from different advocacy organizations, and various experts have been participants. Directors and producers of some award winning documentaries have also made their contributions.

Workshops

The Addis International Film Festival offers a series of free workshops on various topics that showcase appealing works and explore current challenges. Local artists, film professionals, producers, citizen journalists and film lovers are given the opportunity to acquire and improve their skills for successfully producing powerful and independent media.

The Addis International Film Festival was launched in 2006 out of local activists’ sincere devotion to the cause of promoting social responsibility in Ethiopia. The use of film as a medium has been tremendously successful over the last six editions of the event.
